JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL

PORTLAND OR

THE SPECTRUM

Jefferson High School was one of several high schools in Portland Oregon during time of the Great War. These high schools published school magazines each month that covered school activities. Besides school calendars of events the book contained original art work, short stories, and poems; sports and sports pictures; class pictures; and military news.

I have several of these books, The Spectrum, for Jefferson High School and have extracted/scanned the Military News section for these pages. I have also created an 'every person extracted' index for the Portland schools.

October 1918 Spectrum
On page 16... one of the staff members laments:

"If the Germans do not surrender soon, Jefferson will become a young ladies' seminary."
November 1918 Spectrum
Lists the names of 4 current and former students who have died of Pneumonia during the months of October and November and a brief comment
Influenza stopped the clocks at Jefferson
December 1918 Spectrum
Pathos and cheer...
"Peace on earth, good-will to man" at last!
March 1919 Spectrum
This is the last month that I found military news section although the April issue contains the soldier list...much diminished.
The good news for this issue
"Our stout friends seem quite cheerful now that the food ban has been lifted."
Color Bearers List of Jefferson highs former students in military service taken from December 1918 and March 1919 Spectrum
Every Man and Women Index So far only 2 high schools from the Portland area
