Anacortes

My family settled in Anacortes just after the turn of the century, greatgrandma McClean running a boarding house. Like most of the settlers of that time, they came from the mid-west, Nebraska, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Iowa.... and, like many, they were first generation American.
Anacortes is nearly 100 miles north and west of Seattle... still to far away from Seattle to be in the mega-city yet.
Anacortes is a Ferry Link to Victoria on Vancouver Island. It has a pleasant turn of the century downtown area, a large marina, and sunshine. (I have never been in Anacortes in the rain. It must rain because everything is green green but the sun seems to break through the clouds when I'm there...(not to sure what that means (or if it's part of genealogy(just wanted to count how many brackets I could do. (NOT)))) ).

Mt. Vernon
Skagit Valley

Mt Vernon is the county seat. The people at the courthouse are polite. The data...is not computerized or microfilmed (as of 1997). Mt. Vernon sits on the I-5 corridor. It is growing... The outer area has huge wholesaler discount stores and malls. All with easy access to the freeway. The Skagit Valley that rings Mt. Vernon is popular with bikes. The flood plain (surrounded by dikes) grows world famous Tulips (true story ... local Mt. Vernon person went to Holland and as a souvenir wanted to buy some tulip bulbs but Holland had had a bad spring and, therefore, a bad harvest. The only tulips available all had the Skagit Valley logo.)
