FOOTBALL

This coming June will end a successful athletic season for the M. H. S. This last year had marked an increase advance in athletics. Last fall we got our start in football.

Regular practice was not begun on the gridiron until late in the fall on account of lack of material to draw from and lack of spirit to get out and practice, as parents objected that it was too rough and brutal a game. After once seeing a game all objections were withdrawn. Only one regular game was played. It must be remembered that when we played Tulalip it was the first football game ever played in Marysville. The practice which the boys received, together with the excellent coaching of Mr. Lewis, will prove invaluable to them next fall. The game with the Tulalip Indian boys was played at Marysville, December 5, 1908. A good rooters' club had been organized, and all the students were out before the game parading the streets, giving yells and singing songs. A large crowd was present to see the game. Many at first appeared uninterested, but it was not long before all got into the game, pushing and surging up and down the side lines following the progress of the pigskin.

At the signal both teams started in for business, and at the end of the first half neither side had scored, with the ball in our possession on the Tulalip three-yard line. The second half resulted in two touchdowns for us. It was a quick, snappy game throughout. Tulalip used mass plays frequently, while we relied on our open plays for largest gains. The final score was 10 to 0 in our favor. The football outlook for next fall is very promising and a strong team is anticipated early in the season. complete article from the 1909 Quil-Ceda
